NORTHERN VIRGINIA BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION
Class will be held 12pm - 4pm. This four day course will introduce beekeeping basics such as Honey Bee biology, beekeeping equipment, basic colony management, pests, apiary location and local laws. You will be prepared to order equipment and bees, get started beekeeping in spring and care for your bees through the first year. There will also be a hands on apiary session in March/April which will be scheduled as weather permits.
Lotions and Potions. Ms. Swathi Veerivalli, is a Geographer and Researcher with the Engineer Research and Development Center, US Army Corps of Engineers. She has been using bees wax and other natural ingredients to make organic lotions, balms and other healing remedies for several years. She will discuss the best ingredients and methods to make these products and share her favorite time honored recipes.
Fight The Bite. Mr. John Orr, Environmental Health Inspector, Disease Carrying Insects Program, Fairfax Country Health Department (fairfaxcountry.gov/health/FightTheBite) will speak to us about the County's mosquito eradication efforts and ways the County strives to protect pollinators through studies and science.

Steve Rapasky from meadows.sweetbees.com on Swarm Management. Steve Repasky, an EAS Master Beekeeper, author, and nationally recognized lecturer from Pittsburg, PA, is the owner and operator of Meadow Sweet Apiaries. He is a second generation beekeeper and currently President of the Pennsylvania State Beekeepers Association. He raises local survivor stock queens. He manages approximately 100 hives for honey production, queen rearing and nucs.
Dr. Samuel Ramsey, USDA, Beltsville Maryland, is reknown for his work which discovered that the Varroa Destructor mite feeds off the bee larvae fat bodies rather than their blood. Dr. Ramsey is energetic and passionate about defeating the VD and will discuss his current research to prevent the newest menace - the smaller, faster and prolific Tropilalax mite.
